Royal Countess Zingara presents updated immersive show in Melrose Arch

The Royal Countess Zingara has presented a completely new, captivating world at Melrose Arch, distinct from all her previous productions. After a decade-long absence, specifically since returning to Highveld in June 2026, this iconic dinner-circus production has been radically reimagined with a new visual narrative that has charmed both long-time fans and new audiences.

The piece draws inspiration from legendary African kingdoms, ancient trade routes, and richly woven cultural traditions. It transports viewers into a space where stunning artistry, top-tier performance, and unforgettable storytelling merge.

Following a sold-out season in Cape Town, The Royal Countess Zingara turned its attention north, inviting the Johannesburg public to immerse themselves in a world of spectacle, artistry, and magic, presented by a wonderful ensemble of South African and international artists.

The sensational troupe currently performing at Melrose Arch includes aerial acrobatics specialists Johnny Grandi and Manuel Artino from the UK and Sicily; former Cirque du Soleil aerial duo Juan Pablo Palacios and Victoria Peres Yacono from Argentina; Las Vegas role specialist Axel Perez and the sensational vocal quartet The Clorettes from Cape Town, alongside numerous outstanding performers from South Africa and around the world.

Visionary creative director Richard Griffin designed the familiar Spiegeltent, which now rises within an ochre royal structure reminiscent of the grandeur of legendary courts that flourished on the great African continent. The design does not aim to recreate one specific place or period, but rather combines rich Gothic ornamentation, North African craftsmanship, and architectural motifs in an original setting that feels like a ceremonial space suspended between memory, myth, and dream.

Griffin explains: 'The Countess's journey took her through Morocco, across the Sahara, to Malta, and Mali. What remained with her was not just the beauty of these places, but the generosity of spirit she encountered there. In royal courts, desert settlements, and bustling crossroads, she discovered traditions of hospitality, refinement, and grace, which are now expressed in this new world.'

The production is curated by directors Craig Leo and Valentina Leo and brought to life by the creative team under the velvet canopy. At a time when the world often seems divided and uncertain, The Royal Countess Zingara offers something increasingly rare—a shared experience that celebrates connection, joy, and the enduring power of beauty.

Under the guidance of the mysterious Keeper of Time and greeted by the Crying Woman, whose sorrow slowly gives way to jubilation, guests embark on a journey through breathtaking acts, moving music, theatrical splendor, and exquisite cuisine.
