Apple has quietly introduced its new Mac mini model based on the M6 processor ahead of the scheduled September 9th event, signaling an upcoming wave of new product releases and price increases.
This week, Apple published a press release on its website confirming the arrival of the next generation of Mac mini models. Notably, the standard Mac mini is the first Apple device equipped with the new M6 processor.
However, following recent industry trends, prices have risen again. In the US, the entry-level M6 Mac mini costs $899, which is approximately equivalent to 14,300 Rand, although local taxes and import duties in South Africa will increase the retail price.
In parallel, Apple introduced a more expensive Mac mini Pro model running on the M5 chip, starting at $1,699 (approximately 27,157 Rand before local duties).
Since Apple's main annual event is set for September 9th, this sudden press release deviates from standard procedures. Apple rarely unveils new hardware silently before a major keynote, leading to speculation that a large number of releases are in the pipeline.
Among potential future announcements is the long-awaited Apple TV update, which has not changed since 2022. The early rollout of these minor updates may allow Apple to dedicate its September keynote entirely to the updated Siri with AI support, which was announced earlier this year.
Industry observers also anticipate the arrival of new budget iPads and second-generation MacBook Neo, which, according to rumors, will solve memory bottleneck issues by offering improved unified memory.
Until recently, Apple was largely protected from sharp increases in component prices for RAM and storage, which have soared due to the demands of more powerful hardware for AI functions. For example, on Apple.com, the price of the 15-inch MacBook Air increased by $100 (about 1,600 Rand), and the Mac mini is now $200 (about 3,200 Rand) more expensive.
Although much of the future schedule remains speculative, one conclusion is clear: consumers should prepare for a general increase in prices.
