The highly anticipated film 'Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups,' starring superstar Yash, has now been released in theaters. While the public expresses disappointment with the weak plot of the movie, an old interview with director Gittu Mohandas is actively circulating on social media.
People are now linking Gittu's working style, described in the 2021 interview, to the ambiguous direction of the film 'Toxic,' leading to active trolling attacks against the creators.
In an interview given to 'Film Companion' in 2021, Gittu Mohandas explained that her scriptwriting process is highly unpredictable. She shared that while writing, she often doesn't know which direction she is heading, and the situation can become strange when several people work on the script, as they might only offer criticism. She emphasized that her approach is different, and she reaches a conclusion quite late.
She also clarified that she does not adhere to a predetermined structure—no beginning, middle, or end to the story.
Speaking about the film 'Toxic,' Gittu called it 'a drama about gangsters from a female perspective.' Discussing her first experience creating a 'writer room,' she stated: 'I created a writer room for my next film, and I feel like they lost hope in me. If you aren't moving forward, you get bored. I write something, shoot something else, edit something else, and then the film comes out. I never stick to the script. When I meet with producers, I tell them only one thing: what you read, you won't see on screen.'
Following this statement, as memes and trolling were already circulating online about 'Toxic,' the public reacted even more strongly. One user on X (formerly Twitter) mentioned the producer, writing: 'KVN Productions should hear this warning.'
Another user titled the film 'Toxic: The Torture. Director's cut. 70mm Imax.' Another X user suggested that this was precisely why the film received mixed reactions, noting that 'such creative freedom has its risks, and Toxic seems to be an example.'
A third commenter stated: 'That's why things in the film seem dated, because you don't have a clear vision or concept for your project. The lack of vision on screen is obvious, and you pretend? Wow!'
Nevertheless, some people defended Gittu, arguing that many directors work in a similar manner. One X user supported this view, saying: 'Many directors don't stick completely to the script, but they still finish their work. But they are viewed differently.'
The film 'Toxic' features actors such as Yash, Kiara Advani, Nayantara, Huma Kurashi, Tara Sutaria, and Rukmini Vasant. On its release day, the film collected over 150 crore rupees worldwide, although box office collections significantly decreased on the second day.
