Representatives from Uzbekistan and Hong Kong held a meeting in Tashkent on August 27, 2026, dedicated to strengthening bilateral cooperation in the fields of trade, economy, investment, as well as joint work in legal services and international arbitration. This was reported by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan.
The negotiations took place at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan with the participation of a delegation from Hong Kong led by Secretary for Justice Paul Lam. The meeting gathered representatives from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan, the Ministry of Justice, the Tashkent International Arbitration Center (TIAC), and local law firms, as well as delegates from the General Chamber of Commerce of Hong Kong, the World Federation of Business Associations of Hong Kong, and international legal and financial companies.
Key Areas of Cooperation
The central topic of discussion was establishing direct business contacts between the two regions, increasing investment interaction, and studying opportunities for practical cooperation in the field of commercial legal support. Special attention was paid to dispute resolution mechanisms and international arbitration.
Diana Baizakova, Director of the Tashkent International Arbitration Center, noted that TIAC has been developing cooperation with the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC) since 2023. As part of this partnership, both arbitration centers have developed trans-institutional arbitration rules that have gained international recognition, and their application demonstrates the need for such mechanisms to settle commercial disputes.
Delegates also discussed strengthening professional ties between Hong Kong law firms and Uzbek legal practice, focusing on providing legal assistance to investment projects, establishing joint ventures, and corporate services for entrepreneurs.
Additional areas of potential interaction were included in the agenda, including financial and banking services, investment management, financial technology, digital economy, legal consulting, and international arbitration. At the conclusion of the meeting, representatives from Uzbekistan and Hong Kong reaffirmed their commitment to expanding practical participation, developing new joint initiatives, and strengthening economic ties.
