He won the Grand Chess Tour Finals title for the first time by defeating renowned American Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana with a score of 15-13 in a thrilling final match. With this historic achievement, Praggnanand becomes the first Indian player to secure this prestigious title and also received a prize money of two hundred thousand US dollars.
In this match, Praggnanand made a spectacular comeback, as the day had started quite challenging for him. There was a point when the Indian Grandmaster was six points behind Caruana, but he completely changed the course of the match and took the lead by winning both rapid matches.
Subsequently, Caruana attempted a comeback in the blitz segment, but Praggnanand maintained the pressure and ultimately clinched the final with a score of 15-13. In the first blitz game, Praggnanand had ample opportunities to win, but made a mistake due to time pressure, which worsened his position; however, Caruana could not capitalize on this, and the match ended in a draw.
