India shifts from software development to deep tech and satellite projects

A decade ago, the model for venture capital success in India was quite predictable: a group of driven engineers would create software code, develop user-friendly application interfaces, and solve problems in consumer logistics or enterprise software. This approach led to unprecedented wealth accumulation, formed global opportunities for providing IT services as back-office support, and turned India into the world's third-largest startup ecosystem and a global hub for GCC.

However, today, conversations with founders in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai reveal a profound shift in energy. The presentations reaching incubators, accelerators, funds, and family offices no longer focus on optimizing delivery algorithms or corporate SaaS.

Now, they are dedicated to liquid-fuel rocket engines, indigenous semiconductor architectures, warehouse robotics, and electric vertical take-off aircraft. India's narrative in venture investment is undergoing a fundamental transformation: the country is moving from creating digital software for the world to developing advanced hardware and deep technologies to solve complex global challenges. This shift is not just a concept. The launch of Vikram-1 by Skyroot Aerospace has made India the third country after the US and China with private orbital launch capabilities.

To understand the reason behind this shift, it is necessary to examine the breakthroughs occurring in India's deep tech landscape. Founders are demonstrating a willingness to dedicate patient time and capital to creating physical products capable of competing globally.

In the private space sector, companies like Skyroot Aerospace and Agnikul Cosmos have redefined access to orbit through private rocket launches and 3D-printed semi-cryogenic engines. Skyroot alone attracted about $60 million in May 2026, raising its valuation above $1.1 billion, making it India's first space unicorn. Meanwhile, Dhruva Space is scaling satellite platforms, Pixxel is creating hyperspectral constellations, and Digantara is tracking space debris. India's Department of Space now boasts over 400 space startups, and the domestic space economy is approaching $9 billion with ambitions to reach $44 billion within a decade.

Beyond aerospace, leaders in industrial automation, such as GreyOrange and Unbox Robotics, export warehousing systems worldwide, while ePlane Company and Sarala Aerospace are pioneers in electric air transport. Simultaneously, domestic defense and semiconductor startups are developing specialized chips and secure equipment to ensure technological sovereignty.

Nevertheless, building global hardware in India faces significant hurdles. Indian founders contend with stiff competition from established supply chains in China and massive capital concentration in the United States. Operating across different jurisdictions requires navigating complex export restrictions, dual-use technology mandates, and stringent international regulations.

To achieve global success, Indian deep tech startups cannot rely solely on low-cost manufacturing. They must build protected intellectual property through patent protection of processes and utility models, as well as obtain regulatory approvals in international markets.

Historically, deep tech projects required seven to ten years to reach market commercialization. Today, this innovation lifecycle is rapidly shortening. This acceleration is driven by three main factors. First, generative AI and large language models allow founders to conduct virtual design iterations, physical simulations, and circuit schematics much faster. Second, cross-border supply chains and specialized equipment financing have reduced prototyping time. Finally, founders are becoming more aggressive in obtaining patents for processes and utility models, creating multi-layered intellectual property barriers early in their development.

India is at a critical economic inflection point. This momentum is already visible in capital markets: Indian deep tech startups are attracting approximately 37% more funding year-over-year, despite an overall decline in private startup funding.

The key domestic driver of growth is the expanding balance sheet of Corporate India. With the average quarterly revenue of leading enterprises across various sectors exceeding 10,000 crore rupees, the purchasing power of the domestic corporate sector has reached an unprecedented level. Unlike previous decades when Indian corporations heavily relied on imported technology, local company leadership now possesses the capital and authority to invest in domestic innovation. Corporate giants are procuring indigenous robotics for supply chain automation, procurement officers in the defense sector are signing contracts to select products from domestic space and equipment suppliers, and balance sheets are participating in joint investments in localized semiconductor development and network automation.

Government policy also aligns with this shift. Extended recognition periods for deep tech up to 20 years, higher turnover thresholds, and national innovation funds demonstrate a clear political commitment to patient capital. In February 2026, the Cabinet approved the Startup India Fund of Funds 2.0 with a corpus of 10,000 crore rupees for deep tech and advanced manufacturing, and redefined recognition to 20 years and tax benefits for companies in AI, biotechnology, quantum technologies, and advanced materials with annual revenues up to 300 crore rupees.

For founders, the task is clear: solve fundamental real-world problems with a high degree of intellectual property protection. For investors, the conclusion is equally obvious. Some of the biggest venture opportunities of the next decade may arise from teams bridging the gap between bits and atoms, taking Indian engineering from software codebases to global markets, orbital trajectories, and beyond.
