The Whale Cultural Center, located in Andenes on the island of Andøya, is scheduled to open in June 2027. This landmark facility is situated on the remote coast of Norway and was designed by Danish architect Dorthe Mandrup.
The center is dedicated to the whales inhabiting the surrounding Arctic coast. Mandrup's design is conceived as an extension of the coastline: a wide concrete roof smoothly rises from the rocky terrain, resembling the curved back of a whale emerging from the sea. Due to its low profile, the building harmoniously fits into the horizon, and the roof itself becomes an accessible landscape.
This roof will provide a public viewing platform with views of the Norwegian Sea, integrating the surrounding landscape into the visitor experience. From here, one can observe the same waters where sperm whales and other species of whales meet year-round.
Inside the center, exhibitions, scientific research, art displays, and narratives dedicated to whales and their relationship with nature and humanity will be organized. The project aims to foster a deeper emotional and sensory connection between people and these marine giants, as well as their habitat.
As The Whale is being constructed, it demonstrates a modern approach to cultural architecture. Mandrup's design seeks to frame the Arctic landscape, making the sea, sky, and changing northern light an integral part of the architecture itself. Ultimately, The Whale is intended to become an iconic meeting place between humans and nature, between land and sea, celebrating one of nature's most fascinating ecosystems.
