India Yamaha Motor (IYM) announced the release of the long-awaited YZF-R2 model in India on Thursday, thereby strengthening its recognizable R series portfolio. A senior company official noted that India is being viewed as a global hub for Yamaha in engineering, manufacturing, and export.
The YZF-R2 is Yamaha's first product in the 200cc segment in the Indian market, with deliveries set to begin by mid-September. The new YZF-R2 model, which is the first of its kind globally, is available from ₹2,30,500 (exhibition hall, Delhi). The company emphasized that the launch of the YZF-R2 demonstrates Yamaha's commitment to expanding its lineup of premium motorcycles and offering products that meet the changing aspirations of Indian riders.
This new lightweight sport motorcycle will be positioned above the YZF-R15 model and will be equipped with a newly developed 204cc four-stroke liquid-cooled engine. The new power unit develops 26.5 hp, which is the best figure in the segment, along with a maximum torque of 19.1 Nm. It provides sharp acceleration, smooth power delivery, and an exciting character at high revs. The engine is based on a valve mechanism with a roller indicator coated with diamond-like carbon (DLC), a technology borrowed from the flagship R1 Yamaha model.
Hazime Aota, Chairman of Yamaha Motor India Group, stated: 'The YZF-R2 is not an entry into a new segment; it is a motorcycle built for riders devoted to the spirit of the Yamaha R series.' He also added that in the first half of 2026, Yamaha demonstrated confident growth of over 41 percent year-on-year in India. To sustain this success in the future and during the festive season, the company has expanded its presence across the country while maintaining its local R&D and manufacturing capabilities in Chennai.
Motorcyclists in India have eagerly awaited this launch, hoping that the new product will replicate the success of the R15, which many still consider the ideal beginner sport bike, especially in the affordable two-wheeler segment. Aota stressed: 'India is no longer just an internal powerhouse. India is becoming a global center for Yamaha in engineering, manufacturing, and, moreover, exporting high-quality motorcycles designed for the world stage.'
He also mentioned laying a solid foundation in electric mobility, noting that their scooter is a benchmark premium product setting new standards for performance and style. The launch of the YZF-R2 came amid disappointment among dedicated Yamaha fans after the popular YZF R3, a 321cc sport model (albeit an older version), became unavailable in India earlier this year.
According to Aota, 'The launch of the YZF-R2 marks an important milestone in Yamaha's long-term growth strategy. Combining the authentic DNA of the R series with lightness and excellent fuel efficiency, it offers an exciting and accessible entry into our world of supersports. Inspired by the flagship R series motorcycles worldwide and built on an entirely new platform, the YZF-R2 reflects our confidence in India's engineering expertise and its growing role in Yamaha's global product strategy.'
The YZF-R2 will be offered in three variants with five different color schemes. All YZF-R2 models are equipped with a full suite of performance and safety technologies, including 17-inch wheels, Traction Control System (TCS), assisted and slipper clutch, Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) with riding modes, 37mm Upside Down Forks (USD), and dual-channel ABS as standard equipment.
In conclusion, Aota expressed deep gratitude to the R series customers in India for their unwavering trust and passion, which have helped make the R series one of Yamaha's most iconic motorcycle families in the country. He noted that there are now over a million R series motorcycles on the roads of India, and these strong relationships continue to inspire the company to push the boundaries of innovation and performance. He expressed confidence that the YZF-R2 will continue this tradition, set a new benchmark in its segment, and inspire the next generation of Yamaha riders.
