Rabat Hydroelectric Power Plant Begins Electricity Generation in Kashkadarya Region

The six-megawatt Rabat hydroelectric power plant was officially commissioned in the Shahrisabz district of the Kashkadarya region on August 26. According to a statement from Uzbekhydroenergo, this station will annually produce an average of 26.2 million kWh of electricity, which will meet the needs of nearly 11 thousand households.

The opening ceremony gathered representatives of the Shahrisabz district administration, Uzbekhydroenergo employees, regional industry enterprises, contractors and construction companies, energy specialists, local activists, and media representatives.

The implementation of the Rabat project is aimed at increasing generation capacity, supporting the socio-economic development of the Shahrisabz district, and improving the living standards of the local population. It is expected that the operation of the station will allow for annual savings of 8 million cubic meters of natural gas and 6,700 tons of coal.

Furthermore, the functioning of the HPP should contribute to reducing harmful atmospheric emissions and increasing the share of renewable energy in the country's energy balance.

The construction of the Rabat hydroelectric power plant is carried out within the framework of Presidential Decree No. PP-163. The total investment in the Rabat, Chappasuy, and Tamshush hydropower projects in the Kashkadarya region amounts to 69.5 million US dollars, of which 20.4 million dollars has been allocated directly to the Rabat project.

As part of this same investment plan, the commissioning of two additional hydroelectric power plants—Chappasuy and Tamshush—is planned. Their launch is intended to expand the region's hydropower potential and increase electricity generation from renewable sources. Uzbekhydroenergo added that the development of new facilities is also aimed at increasing the efficiency of water resource utilization and ensuring a stable response to growing electricity demand.

In the Bostanlyk district of Tashkent region, near the Charvak reservoir in Burchmulla, the 'Chorbog' wind power plant with a capacity of 20 MW has been commissioned. This facility is the first of its kind for Uzbekhydroenergo, which previously focused exclusively on hydropower. The project's realization was made possible by a non-repayable grant from the Chinese government amounting to 28 million dollars, and the general contractor was the Chinese company TBEA.

Corporate Director Li Bianqiu stated that this project is the fourth for TBEA in Uzbekistan; the company is also involved in the modernization of HPP-19, HPP-22, and HPP-23 of the Nizhne-Bozsuy cascade in the Tashkent region. Construction work on the power plant began in July 2025.

Four wind turbines have been installed at the site, each with a capacity of 5 MW. The technical specifications of each turbine include a height of 105 meters, a blade length of 90 meters, and a rotor diameter of 183 meters. Azimjon Ahmadjonov, First Deputy Chairman of the Board of Uzbekhydroenergo, noted that the most difficult part of the construction was transporting the blades along complex mountain roads to the installation site.

The station's operation is fully automated, and specialists remotely monitor its operation from a nearby control center. Each turbine is equipped with a lift for maintenance. Rustam Ergeshov, Head of the Operation Service of the 'Chorbog' station, specified that sensors record wind direction, allowing the turbines to assume an optimal position for maximum efficiency.

The wind generators begin generating electricity at a stable wind speed of 3 m/s. Upon reaching a speed of 11.4 m/s, they reach their nominal capacity of 5 MW, and if the wind weakens, the system automatically shuts down the equipment. Ergeshov explained that the dispatch point functions as the central node of the station, from where continuous monitoring of the generators takes place, and remote control of switching on and off is possible. Daily generation forecasts are formed based on wind and weather data.

The station is integrated into the overall energy system of Uzbekistan. According to Ayubkhon Musulmonkulov, a leading specialist at Uzbekhydroenergo, the station can produce an average of about 50 million kWh of energy annually, which is enough to supply approximately 20 thousand households in the Bostanlyk district. Furthermore, according to the specialist's estimates, this will lead to savings of over 13 million cubic meters of gas per year.

After commissioning, employees of the Chinese company trained local personnel on operating the equipment and its specific operation. Currently, the station staff independently manages all production processes. Nevertheless, Uzbekhydroenergo does not currently plan to develop wind energy as a standalone direction; Ayubkhon Musulmonkulov stated that the company's strategy until 2032 does not include the construction of new wind power plants, as the main focus remains on hydropower.

In the Bostanlyk district, the company is also developing projects for large hydropower facilities, including the Mullalak Hydroelectric Power Plant (140 MW) on the Pskem River, Yukori-Pskem Hydro-Accumulation Power Plant (160 MW), Korongitugay Hydroelectric Power Plant (325 MW), and Khodjikent Hydro-Accumulation Power Plant (600 MW).
