Researchers confirm presence of Egyptian horseshoe bats in Europe after two centuries

Scientists were able to confirm information from the 19th century regarding sightings of bats from the horseshoe bat family in European territory. During acoustic monitoring of microbats on Pantelleria Island, located near Sicily, specialists recorded characteristic echolocation signals and social calls of the Egyptian horseshoe bat.

This species of bat is usually found in Africa and the Middle East. In one of the audio recordings, the voices of two individual specimens could be distinguished. Based on this data, it can be assumed that a small community of Egyptian horseshoe bats exists on Pantelleria Island.

The results of this scientific work were officially presented in the publication Global Ecology and Conservation.
