AmpereHour creates battery storage systems for energy generated by solar farms

Solar power plants generate energy during the day, but production ceases after dark, while demand peaks in the evening. For a long time, India built such farms facing this mismatch. However, the situation has changed: the Ministry of Energy now requires that tenders for solar energy include localized storage equal to one-tenth of the installed capacity and capable of operating for at least two hours.

A grid battery is not just a set of cells; it includes modular racks, energy conversion equipment, thermal regulation systems, protective mechanisms, and, most importantly, software that determines charging and discharging points, balances blocks, and maintains the entire installation within acceptable parameters for twenty years.

AmpereHour, founded in 2017 by four IIT Bombay graduates—Ayush Mishra, Rahul Shelke, Harshal Thakur, and Nihar Jathar—positions itself as an end-to-end provider. The company is based in Pune and covers hardware, software, and engineering work for installation.

AmpereHour has more experience than most competitors. Nine years is a significant period in the Indian energy storage sector, where the market barely existed when the company started, and most of the current activity has taken place in the last two or three years.

The hardware is modular. The company's core element, named AH-Stack, is designed to be combined into installations of various scales, allowing one product to serve both a factory needing backup power and a utility requiring large-scale grid storage.

A distinguishing feature of the company is its software. The ELINA energy management platform controls battery behavior, optimizing performance, integrating renewable generation, providing backup power, and maintaining grid stability. In storage, economic efficiency depends more on intelligent energy utilization than on the cells themselves.

Furthermore, the company performs installation work independently, providing design, procurement, and construction services instead of just selling equipment and leaving integration to other contractors. For clients purchasing storage systems for the first time, this eliminates the most complex part of the buying process.

The deployment figures are quite significant for a company of its size. It reports commissioning over 40 MWh and having about 1000 MWh in the pipeline across approximately 50 projects. It is important to distinguish these concepts: commissioned means operational, while in the pipeline means a signed contract currently under construction.

AmpereHour Energy raised $5 million in a Series A round announced in March 2025. Avaana Capital led the round, with participation from UC Impower and existing private investors. Previously, the company had raised about $2.45 million, and according to databases, the total funding reached approximately $7.45 million across five rounds.

The company's client list is a strength of its operations. Listed among them are IndiGrid, an exchange infrastructure trust, as well as Cummins, Siemens, Coca-Cola, Amazon, and BRPL, the Delhi distribution utility, along with a client in the UAE. For an Indian energy storage company, this combination of industrial multinational corporations and grid operators is unusual.

Investor UC Impower characterized the company as a leader in the battery storage systems market, citing its team and technical capabilities. This was an assessment made by the interested party at the time of investment.

The Series A round started eighteen months ago, and no subsequent rounds have been announced since. The gap between the 40 MWh commissioned and the 1000 MWh in the pipeline is the business yet to be realized. In storage, contracted capacity generates revenue only upon project completion, and large grid installations can take years.
