Kiruna-Lind Dever performs in the one-woman cabaret 'Damsel in Distress'. This new solo show, directed by award-winning Daniel Anderson, tells the story of a bookworm who needs to find her courage.
Wela Kapela's production of Damsel in Distress narrates the story of Griselda, whose name refers to the original 'damsel in distress' from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Griselda is a librarian and has not left the building for a very long time. She was consumed by fear and preferred the safe world of fictional literature to life.
When reality intrudes into her life, Griselda's answer is simple: 'No, thank you. I'd rather read my book.' As a passionate traveler in imagination, Griselda explores the world of books, visiting places such as Paris, New York, and Germany, among other destinations.
However, her solitude is interrupted by the appearance of the charismatic Edward Pamment, who begins visiting the library frequently. His irresistible charm and mannerisms, reminiscent of Darcy, awaken in Griselda a curiosity about the world outside her carefully constructed castle, forcing her to confront the fears that kept her imprisoned.
Through music, humor, and sincerity, 'Damsel in Distress' explores themes of bravery, survival, and finding the strength to start a new life. The show uses popular songs such as I Love Paris, Mein Herr, At Seventeen, Windmills of Your Mind, Bang-Bang, and You Don’t Own Me, transporting the audience from Griselda's imaginary world of travel to the dark corners of her past.
Furthermore, 'Damsel in Distress' touches upon the realities of femicide and gender violence, promising the audience a captivating journey of hope, heart, courage, and survival.
Kiruna-Lind Dever previously played Roxy Hart in 'Chicago' and Sophie in 'Mamma Mia!', but this performance is her first solo cabaret. Samata Riedel also participates in the production as the pianist and musical director. The script was written by the award-winning author Amanda Botsma.
Tickets are available on webtickets for September 11th and 12th at 7:30 PM, as well as on September 12th at 2:00 PM. Prices are R220, R200 for seniors, and R180 for those under 13.
