Every week, Olhar Espacial features two astronomical images that garnered attention last week. Specifically, a pair of photos taken by Brazilian researchers showcasing a significant astronomical event was presented.
The first image captures an unusual object crossing the solar eclipse on the 12th in Spain. Immediately after the full darkness phase ended, a bright point flashed briefly, leaving a glowing trail for a short time. Since this eclipse coincided with the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, some suggested it might be an unprecedented record of a meteor passing in front of the eclipse. However, by cross-referencing data on the date, time, location, and direction of the object with air traffic databases, it was determined that this trail was left by an airplane.
The second image shows a recording of a track left on the lunar surface as a result of the impact of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on August 5th. This shot was obtained by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) when it was less than 100 km from the lunar surface, allowing for a clear capture of a crater approximately 18 meters in diameter and 3 meters deep. Additionally, streaks of darker material ejected during the impact are visible. The rocket impact on the Moon attracted the attention of astronomers worldwide, who attempted to register a possible impact flash or plume of ejected lunar material.
