The government of São Tomé has decided to increase the minimum pension by 8 euros, which will take effect in September. According to Americo Ramos, this decision was under review for some time and will be applied retroactively from July.
Americo Ramos emphasized that for the Government, this is a very significant step as it may contribute to improving the pension provision for recipients. These statements were made after his visit to the National Institute of Social Security (INSS).
Ramos, who has also headed the Ministry of Labour and Solidarity since August 12th following the dismissal of the previous supervisory minister, assured that the social security fund is stable, but noted the need for further improvements. He stressed the necessity of continuing work by ensuring social security with competent personnel, as well as urgently implementing digitalization and service modernization.
This increase is the second increase in the minimum pension during the current legislative period. The previous increase provided for a rise from 1,000 to 1,200 units, which began in January 2025. Furthermore, elections are planned for September 27th in São Tomé and Príncipe, covering legislative, regional, and local authorities.
