According to a study conducted by scientists from the UCLA Institute of Neuroscience and Human Behavior, riding a motorcycle can have a positive effect on concentration and stress reduction.
The research revealed a 28% decrease in biomarkers of stress-related hormones after approximately twenty minutes of riding. This study was funded by Harley-Davidson and published in the scientific journal Brain Research.
To obtain these results, researchers observed experienced adult motorcyclists during a route lasting about 22 minutes. The route was taken on their own motorcycles and under conditions approximating everyday traffic.
In addition to reducing stress indicators, the act of riding itself caused an 11% increase in heart rate and a 27% increase in adrenaline levels. According to the researchers, these changes are similar to those observed during light physical exercise and indicate a moderate state of bodily activation.
Changes also occurred in brain activity: the motorcyclists demonstrated a state of alertness comparable to that induced by a cup of coffee, accompanied by increased concentration and reaction ability.
The positive effect was not limited to the time participants spent on motorcycles; improved concentration remained measurable for at least ten minutes after the ride ended.
The data suggest that motorcycle riding can combine physical and mental stimulation with a state of sustained attention, helping the rider maintain focus on the task and reduce the influence of external distractions.
