Signature Art Gallery is hosting internationally renowned New York cabaret artist Adrienne Han for a romantic musical journey in the city of love as part of the launch of a new cultural initiative.
This new program, titled 'Music and Art Series,' was conceived by the artist and owner of Signature Art Gallery, Craig Morris. He believes that the traditional function of a gallery can extend beyond merely displaying visual art.
The series aims to unite various forms of creative expression in carefully curated, intimate events, allowing art, music, theater, food, and wine to become part of a single immersive experience.
The first performance, 'Paris Nights – Les nuits de Paris,' sets a high standard. Signature Art Gallery invites Adrienne Han, the celebrated New York cabaret artist, for this romantic musical journey.
Cabaret is one of the oldest forms of show business, captivating people for decades. Han chose to become a cabaret artist because she is also a storyteller. She emphasizes the importance of giving each performance individuality so that the audience can learn about her and her history. Han notes that her performances are intimate, and Signature Art Gallery is ideally suited to present authentic French cabaret in Cape Town, as this art form is little known here.
Han describes the gallery as an inspiring place filled with unique and beautiful sculptures and paintings by top South African artists. Together with Morris, she aims to make 'Paris Nights – Les nuits de Paris' an unforgettable experience for viewers, presenting an authentic 85-minute French cabaret under the patronage of the French Consulate General in Cape Town. She is accompanied by South African pianist Corneille Engelbrecht, and food and wine will also be served.
Han values intimate evenings for the opportunity for direct interaction with the audience, which distinguishes this experience from attending a concert or theater performance. For 'Paris Nights,' she will interpret the music of iconic figures such as Edith Piaf, Charles Aznavour, and Jacques Brel. When performing Piaf's classical pieces, Han strives to respect the original artist while remaining true to herself. She asserts that she does not try to imitate or pass herself off as another artist but always remains the authentic Adrienne. This, she says, is a true storytelling experience through music, combining her personal creative journey with the stories of her predecessors.
Interaction with the audience is also part of the cabaret: flirting, jokes, and conversation with guests. She respects the original artists by embodying their stories while maintaining her own individuality.
Han and the owner of Signature Art Gallery aim to involve gallery visitors in enjoying music, food, and fine wine against the backdrop of the fantastic art of Africa's greatest artists. She believes that the audience craves such unusual experiences in unconventional settings. Instead of simply walking through the gallery or attending another classical concert, they combine visual, visual arts, performing, and culinary arts, engaging the public.
Furthermore, they engage all five senses: sight (art), hearing (music), touch (sculptures), taste (good food and wine), and smell (wine and food).
Han is delighted to present the Parisian experience in Cape Town, noting the similarity between the world of French cabaret and African storytelling. She has often performed for the United Nations or the European Delegation or worked with diplomats and politicians, as she believes in the concept of 'diplomacy through music.' Her main goal is to build connections between people and nations, as in the current global political climate, people and politicians erect walls and hatred reigns. She tries to convey the idea that music heals wounds, unites people, and that there is no 'us'—only humanity.
