Ten Newborns Die at Malda Medical College; Health Department Requests Report

An incident involving the death of ten newborn babies in one day occurred at the Malda Medical College and hospital in West Bengal. This incident, which reportedly took place in the latter half of August, has drawn the attention of the state's Health Department.

The Health Department has sent a request to the hospital administration demanding a detailed report on the situation. According to sources within the hospital, the total number of deceased newborns was ten. The hospital administration confirmed these deaths but clarified that only two of these ten children were born directly at the Malda Medical College and hospital; the remaining eight were transferred there from other locations in critical condition.

According to available information, these eight newborns were born in other government hospitals or private maternity homes. After their condition deteriorated, they were sent to the Malda Medical College for treatment. Upon arrival at the hospital, the children were in critical condition. Hospital sources reported that among the deceased newborns, various serious health problems were observed, including respiratory distress, jaundice, and heart diseases.

Following the report of ten newborn deaths in a single day, the Health Department demanded that the hospital provide comprehensive information. It was instructed to prepare and send an extensive report. The Medical Superintendent of Malda Medical College, Prasanjit Bar, also confirmed the death of ten infants in one day. He emphasized that only two children were born at this hospital.

According to the superintendent, the other eight newborns were transferred here from other places in critical condition. He specified that these children were brought to the Malda Medical College from external government hospitals or private maternity homes. The superintendent noted that the Health Department had requested a report on this matter, and the hospital had already submitted a preliminary report. A more detailed document would be sent later.

The hospital administration stated that preliminary information about the incident has already been provided to the Health Department. A comprehensive report containing full details is currently being prepared, which will include the circumstances of the death of ten newborns in one day and information on the severe cases transferred to the hospital. The hospital also explained that eight of the ten deceased newborns were transferred from outside in critical condition, while only two were born at the Malda Medical College and hospital. The hospital administration linked all these cases to serious health problems.

Among these newborns, issues with breathing, jaundice, and cardiological diseases were noted. After admission to the hospital in critical condition, the children received treatment but passed away. It is expected that once the detailed report is received from the Health Department, all information regarding this incident will become public. For now, the hospital administration has submitted a preliminary report to the Health Department and promised to provide a full report soon.

The case of ten newborn deaths in a single day at Malda Medical College has raised questions about the healthcare system. However, according to available information, eight out of the ten newborns who died in the hospital were transferred from other hospitals and private maternity homes in critical condition.
