The Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone held an Open Day for the media on August 20, gathering representatives from over twenty leading media institutions in Sierra Leone. The event aimed to promote mutual understanding and demonstrate the growing cooperation between the two countries.
The event took place at the Chinese Embassy on Spur Road, Wilberforce, Freetown, and was attended by representatives from the Commission of Independent Media, the Sierra Leonean Journalists Association (SLAJ), the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), and other media organizations.
Statements by the Chinese Ambassador
The Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Zhao Yun, stated that China and Sierra Leone have mutually respected and supported each other for over 55 years since establishing diplomatic relations, and their traditional friendship is becoming stronger. He characterized the bilateral cooperation as an example of China's solidarity with Africa and mutually beneficial partnership, noting the expansion of interaction in political, trade, medical, educational spheres, and people-to-people exchange.
Zhao urged Sierra Leonean journalists to be witnesses to the 'real China,' disseminate information about friendship between peoples, and protect the relationship between China and Sierra Leone, while encouraging coverage of practical cooperation and positive international exchange.
Economic Interaction and Cultural Events
The Ambassador highlighted the growth of economic ties, reporting that bilateral trade reached $2.3 billion in 2025, nearly 30 percent more than in 2024. Sierra Leone's exports to China increased by over 40% during the same period, and total trade between the two countries grew by almost 38% in the first half of 2026.
He noted that China's zero-tariff policies contributed to this growth and mentioned ongoing discussions to increase Sierra Leone's exports to China, including palm oil, coffee, and cocoa. As part of the 55th anniversary celebration, cultural and media activities were presented, such as the SLBC program 'Conversation with China,' the SLAJ short film competition on the theme 'China-Sierra Leone Cooperation in My Eyes,' and a five-part documentary produced by SLBC, AYV, and Star TV.
Overview of China's Economy and Visa Facilitation
Speaking about China's economic situation, Zhao noted that the country's GDP reached 69.57 trillion yuan ($10.25 trillion USD) in the first half of 2026, with 6.95 million new urban jobs created. Total imports and exports amounted to 25.47 trillion yuan ($3.75 trillion USD), which is 16.9% higher compared to the previous year. He affirmed China's commitment to high-quality development and called for broader international cooperation amid the rise of unilateralism and protectionism.
Zhao also introduced measures facilitating people-to-people exchange under China's Year of People-to-People Exchange with Africa in 2026. Sierra Leonean citizens holding diplomatic or official passports can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days under the bilateral agreement. The Chinese Embassy has also waived the requirement for visa application appointments, and applicants for short-term visas of up to 180 days are exempt from fingerprinting.
The Ambassador reported that over 6,000 Sierra Leonean citizens visited China in 2025, and he called for more people to travel and experience China. The media Open Day included a documentary on international exchange between China and Sierra Leone, testimonials from journalists who visited China, and a Q&A session.
Zhao strongly urged journalists to adhere to professional standards and objectivity in covering events, remaining vigilant against disinformation. He thanked the Sierra Leonean media institutions for supporting mutual understanding and expressed hope that journalists will continue to document the friendship and expanding cooperation between the two countries.
