According to data from the Tashkent Traffic Management Center, the construction of a 1.2-kilometer dedicated Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane on Shahrisabz Street in Tashkent is approaching completion. The construction and reconstruction work for this section is scheduled to finish by August 31, 2026, after which the road will reopen to traffic.
As part of this project, a special lane for public transport is being built, which is physically separated from the main carriageway by concrete curbs. High-capacity buses will travel along this corridor, which required redesigning the road base to withstand constant and heavy loads.
Workers are excavating soil to a depth of over two meters while simultaneously addressing issues of subgrade stability and moisture. Geotextile materials are being used to reinforce the foundation and protect the upper structural layers from water infiltration.
This reinforced design aims to prevent water accumulation under the asphalt, minimize risks of ground shifting and settlement, and ensure regular passage of heavy buses to reduce pavement deformation over time.
The engineering characteristics of the road surface take into account the weight and technical specifications of the buses that will operate in Tashkent, the expected frequency of daily routes, and the constant load factors along the route. This 1.2-kilometer section will be equipped with five stops compliant with BRT standards.
The physical barriers separating the bus lane from general traffic lanes are designed to prevent buses from deviating into general traffic and to prohibit unauthorized vehicles from entering the public transport corridor. Currently, crews are finalizing the reinforcement of the subgrade and installing the BRT infrastructure on Shahrisabz Street. This segment is the first phase of the BRT project on Shahrisabz Street, and further expansion of the dedicated bus corridor is planned in subsequent stages.
