American Food Blogger Masters Traditional South African Braai Preparation

After months of searching for an authentic culinary experience from South Africa, an American food blogger known as Oom Kent managed to host a genuine South African braai himself.

The TikTok user Dine With Kent from Texas set out to understand what makes South African cuisine authentic. As part of his quest, he visited restaurants and bought biltong and droëwors, trying numerous products in pursuit of the real taste.

South Africans closely followed his journey, offering advice on what met the criteria for authenticity and what did not. These recommendations evidently proved useful.

Earlier this year, Kent, affectionately nicknamed 'Oom Kent' by South Africans, was invited to a braai hosted by South Africans living in Florida. It was there that he first experienced the true flavor of this dish.

At this event, he encountered elements such as brandy with cola, the Scottish drink Springbokkie, proper boerewors, and braaibroodjies. The dessert course concluded with malva pudding, koeksters, and milk tart.

His knowledge of South African cuisine expanded further after one subscriber sent him a copy of the book 'Food Trail South Africa,' which contains recipes for popular dishes in the country. Armed with this cookbook and collected ingredients, Oom Kent was able to host a South African braai at home.

Judging by the reaction of his followers, he succeeded brilliantly. The table featured authentic boerewors, spiced roasted lamb seasoned with Six Gun Spice, braaibroodjies, pap, as well as Klipdrift brandy with cola and Black Label. He also ensured there were desserts, concluding the feast with malva pudding and koeksters.

For someone who spent months trying to decipher the secrets of a true South African braai, he clearly conducted thorough preparation. His South African fans quickly expressed their approval.

One subscriber commented: 'Listen. I won't lie, I would come to a braai. This looks very delicious, Oom! Well done.' Another wrote: 'You did an amazing job, Uncle Kent, if I didn't know better, I would think all this food was prepared by real South Africans. And do you have Klippies and Black Label? 10/10.'

After months of searching, tasting, and receiving advice from South Africans, Oom Kent may have finally unlocked this secret.

One subscriber even suggested that he deserves something more official than a compliment on TikTok: 'I think you deserve honorary citizenship in South Africa.'
