The operation named 'State Shield' lasted five days and resulted in the identification, location, and recovery of children aged from two months to seventeen years. According to a statement released Tuesday by the office of the Florida Attorney General, James Uthmeier, many of these children had been victims of various types of mistreatment, neglect, exploitation, or exposure to other criminal activities, such as human trafficking.
In addition to the 163 children rescued specifically in Florida, the operation expanded to other locations in the United States, covering states such as Alabama, California, Ohio, New York, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, and Tennessee.
The scope of the rescues also included situations that occurred in Brazil, as well as Canada, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Finland, Ghana, Guatemala, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, Spain, and Taiwan, although the responsible office did not provide the exact number of children rescued in these countries.
The rescued children were properly transferred by local police forces to designated recovery centers. In these locations, they received support from social services, professionals specialized in child welfare, medical assistance, victim advocates, and other resources focused on children's needs.
So far, three people have been arrested. However, the office of the Florida Attorney General warned that there is an expectation of new arrests in the coming days. Among those detained are one accused of three sexual offenses involving a minor and carrying an arrest warrant for interference with the custody of a minor; another accused of indecent assault against a victim between 12 and 16 years old; and a third accused of interference in child custody cases and resistance to authority without the use of violence.
This large operational effort takes place almost a year after another similar action in Florida, where 122 minors were rescued and six individuals were arrested. Data from the National Task Force for Child Protection indicates that annually, more than 460,000 children go missing in the United States, and although most are found, one in every seven children who run away from home is a victim of sexual trafficking.
