On August 25, ByteDance introduced Doubao Work—an AI-powered office productivity product developed based on the task execution mode within the Doubao assistant. It is now a standalone application with its own desktop client, although it remains integrated into Doubao PC. This tool can create documents, generate spreadsheets and presentations, produce images, videos, and web pages, as well as manage a browser or cloud computer for research and form filling.
Doubao Work enters a market characterized by high competition. Tencent launched WorkBuddy in March, and in early August, Alibaba merged QoderWork, Wukong, and MuleRun into Qwen Office. Furthermore, Kingsoft continues to promote WPS Lingxi. Internationally, Anthropic released Claude Cowork earlier this year, and OpenAI integrated Codex into ChatGPT Work after merging two desktop products in July.
In recent weeks, ByteDance, Alibaba, and Tencent have been actively reorganizing their teams around the AI office direction. The main difference of Doubao Work lies in its close integration with Feishu, ByteDance's collaboration platform. When logging in via a Feishu account, the assistant can access chat records, documents, meeting notes, calendars, and permissions within established boundaries, perform tasks, and record the results back into the system.
For ByteDance, this provides the product with a ready working memory that compensates for the context deficit found in general agents—such as information about what was discussed last week, which version was modified by a manager, or the current project status. The launch also reflects a deliberate separation between chat and work functions. Similar to how ChatGPT separates these two aspects, Doubao Work has an autonomous client instead of existing solely in the input field, providing a specialized workspace with skills, connectors, and cloud computers for long-term office tasks.
Analysts note that the true battleground is determined by which office ecosystem the client is already operating within. Companies deeply integrated into Tencent's tools consider WorkBuddy the most convenient; DingTalk users prefer Qwen Office; teams focused on Feishu choose Doubao Work; while WPS loyalists stick with WPS Lingxi. Although models are rapidly changing, hundreds of thousands of documents, years of meeting recordings, and permission systems remain constant. For now, Doubao Work is betting that knowledge of the current work task is more valuable than possessing the smartest AI model.
