AssessPrep transforms test results into analytical data for educational institutions

Test results show students' academic performance in schools, but they do not always reveal which areas the student is strong in and where there are knowledge gaps. AssessPrep, as an assessment platform, assigns a specific topic and curriculum standard to each task, allowing schools to see where an individual student or an entire class is falling behind.

The platform, headquartered in Gurugram with operations in Jaipur, helps educational institutions create, administer, grade, and analyze tests, primarily for international programs such as IB, Cambridge IGCSE, and Advanced Placement. It collaborates with over 800 schools, using an artificial intelligence-based approach designed to save teachers time and provide schools with more detailed insights into student learning.

Co-founder Karan Gupta explains that the idea arose from observations he made in college and in subsequent years. Governments worldwide were increasing education spending, but student performance in reading and mathematics was not improving at the same pace. He concluded that the weak link was not in teaching, but in assessment. Schools could not accurately measure what students had learned and what they had not, and this became the basis for creating AssessPrep.

Gupta received his economics degree from Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) and his master's degree in economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). In 2013, he co-founded the company with two colleagues, Shekhar Sethi and Abhimanyu Jajharia, graduates of BITS Pilani’s Dubai Campus in computer science. Initially, they worked on another product before launching AssessPrep in 2016.

Gupta describes AssessPrep as a system covering five stages of the assessment cycle: test creation, administration, student monitoring during completion, grading, and results analysis. The test creation process begins with the curriculum: the teacher selects the subject and question type, and the AI generates tasks corresponding to the structure of that curriculum. Teachers can also use a bank of nearly 70,000 exam questions or upload an old test in PDF format for digitization.

The platform includes a screen-locking feature that prevents students from opening other tabs or applications during testing, which schools use to prevent cheating. For schools that are not yet ready to fully transition to digital testing, there is an option to conduct the same test in paper format. The interface supports 13 languages, which is convenient given the number of countries where AssessPrep operates.

Monitoring begins as soon as students start the test. Teachers can assign special conditions, such as extra time, spell check usage, text-to-speech, or calculator access via a toggle, instead of dealing with traditional paperwork. Regarding grading, Gupta considers it a more complex task. While multiple-choice questions can be graded automatically, essays require closer attention, similar to human judgment.

AssessPrep's artificial intelligence evaluates written answers based on criteria set by the teacher, such as vocabulary or argumentation structure. Gupta estimates the current accuracy of this process to be between 85% and 90%. Teachers can also provide the AI with several essays they have already graded to fine-tune the marking closer to their own approach. Every answer graded by the AI is then sent to the teacher for review before being presented to the student.

Paper tests follow a similar process: the teacher photographs the answer sheets, and the platform matches each page to the corresponding student before grading.

At the analysis stage, AssessPrep aims to answer questions that cannot be solved based only on an overall percentage. Each question is linked to one of more than 600 built-in curriculum standards, including IB, Cambridge, NGSS, Advanced Placement, and ACARA, allowing results to be detailed by topic rather than just showing an overall score. As Gupta notes: 'The score doesn't tell the teacher what the student knows or doesn't know; the tagged data does.'

AssessPrep integrates with tools that schools already use, such as Google, Microsoft, Canvas, and ManageBac. The platform is built on Ruby on Rails and React and hosted on Google Cloud in various regions to comply with local data handling regulations. Several AI models are used, including models from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. AssessPrep conducts its own evaluations to determine which model is best suited for a specific task and can switch to better models as they emerge.

Working with student data in over 85 countries makes privacy a key part of the platform. AssessPrep declares compliance with GDPR and the EU AI Act requirements. When grading, name, gender, or race is not transmitted to the AI, and models are not trained on any school's data. The platform also keeps teachers informed: every answer graded by AI and every grade generated by AI is reviewed by a teacher before reaching the student.

Gupta emphasizes: 'Our platform is a teacher's assistant that makes their processes more efficient. You review everything the AI did before publishing it.' Schools decide the level of control to give the AI: some use it only for drafting feedback, while teachers assign the grades themselves. Others allow the AI to perform both functions provided the teacher approves the results before release.

AssessPrep operates in the digital assessment and e-learning software segment of the K-12 edtech sector, which was valued at $13.85 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $32.04 billion by 2033, demonstrating a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 9.9%, according to Grand View Research. Competitors include Exam.net, Canvas LMS, and Otus.

The platform is sold via an annual subscription per student, costing between $6 per student for large districts in the US and $24–$25 for smaller schools, depending on the chosen plan. It currently serves over 800 schools in more than 85 countries. Most of these are private international schools serving grades 6 through 12, alongside a growing base of US public districts and budget schools in Africa.

AssessPrep claims to have saved over a million hours of teachers' working time. According to an AssessPrep survey in 2025 among 93 international schools, 78% of teachers reported that AI-powered automatic grading saved them over 30 minutes per assignment, and 73% noted that tools like anonymous grading and automated scoring increased efficiency.

Shefalika Kumar Chitkar from Singapore International School, Mumbai, states: 'AssessPrep helps us use AI in a thoughtful, responsible, and relevant way.' Audrey Botcher from American International School of Guangzhou calls the platform's locking mode 'a turning point for me this year.' AssessPrep has not sought external funding; its growth has been entirely self-funded by the founders, who reinvested in the business. The founders state that the company is now profitable and does not need to raise capital.

Revenue has grown by approximately 60% year-over-year over the last four years, and the company expects revenue this year to be between $2 and $2.5 million. The company employs about 50 people in Gurugram and Jaipur. Gupta states: 'We have enough funds to avoid the growth pressure that comes with having investors.' In the near term, AssessPrep plans to expand in existing British and American curricula markets while expanding to schools with national Indian curricula as CBSE transitions to digitalization. In the long term, Gupta intends to spread the experience of AssessPrep gained within international curricula more widely and make digital assessment accessible to schools of all budgets. The company does not plan to expand into universities or hiring platforms.
