The National Medical Commission (NMC) is making efforts to update the national register of doctors by requiring the re-registration of approximately 1.1 million practicing physicians. However, according to Rem Nagarajan, the Commission has been unable to register even recently qualified professionals, despite many government registries submitting relevant records to it annually.
The NMC is pushing a regulatory requirement that mandates about 1.1 million doctors to undergo a re-registration procedure to form an up-to-date national medical registry. Despite the regular submission of new data from various government registries, the Commission has failed to enter even recent entrants into the system.
A case from 2023 is cited: over 10,000 foreign graduates of medical universities successfully passed the qualification examination. Following this, they must complete a mandatory one-year internship before receiving permanent registration allowing them to work in India. Consequently, most of these 10,000 individuals should have been registered in 2025. Thus, the total number of doctors who were supposed to be registered in 2025 is approximately 80,000, but the register only accounts for slightly more than half of this figure (55%).
