How to properly clean glasses: safe methods for removing stains and scratches from lenses

If you wear glasses, traces of fingerprints, sweat, grease, and dust inevitably land on the lenses. Usually, people try to clean them using any available household cleaning agents or go to an optical shop. However, using any cleaning agent can lead to damage to the lenses.

Most people use their t-shirt, paper towel, or cloth to clean their glasses. With this approach, small scratches can appear on expensive lenses, and the anti-glare coating can be damaged. To restore a new shine to your glasses without scratches and extend their service life, it is crucial to use the correct method. Below are simple, cost-free ways to safely clean glasses at home.

Before starting the cleaning, thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water to avoid transferring dust or grease from your hands to the lenses.

Place the glasses under a stream of fresh or slightly warm tap water. This will allow dirt and dust particles to be washed off the lenses, preventing scratches from rubbing. It is important not to use very hot water, as this can damage the coating.

Take just one drop of mild dish soap onto your fingertip.

Gently massage the area of the front and back of both lenses, as well as the temples and nose pads, for 15–20 seconds, paying attention to areas where sweat and grease accumulate.

Afterward, place the glasses under a stream of water again to completely rinse off the soap.

Shake off excess water by gently shaking the glasses. Then, carefully wipe the lenses and frame only with a microfiber cloth that came with the glasses, or a 100% clean cotton cloth. Your glasses will shine like new, without any abrasions.

Never wipe glasses with t-shirts, paper towels, cloths, or newspapers. It is also strictly forbidden to use saliva or household glass cleaners (such as Colin), as they completely destroy the lens coating.

When you are not wearing your glasses, always store them in a special hard case. The microfiber cloth should be washed and kept clean weekly.
