Long queues formed at gas stations in Tehran on Tuesday after the United States announced new sanctions targeting Iran, reports AFP.
These new measures are being adopted as part of Washington's increased economic pressure on Tehran. This follows six months of war that has reached a military stalemate, with peace talks stalled and much of the traffic through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz blocked.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent presented plans on Monday which he called an 'economic strangulation' of Iran. He stated that the goal is to 'cut off every economic artery supporting this tyrannical regime.'
According to AFP, Iranian authorities have largely ignored threats from Washington, noting that the country has lived under US sanctions for decades. Nevertheless, Tehran residents expressed concerns that the latest steps could further affect fuel supplies and the economy in general.
The queues at gas stations arose against the backdrop of growing uncertainty regarding fuel availability and prices, as the latest US measures intensify economic pressure on Iran.
