Local SASSA office in Atlooe resumes full operation, providing service schedule information

The local office of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) in Atlooe has officially returned to full operational capacity, ending service disruptions caused by a recent security guard strike.

The strike occurred due to disagreements between security staff and the company contracted by SASSA. The agency announced that benefit recipients can now access all standard social grant services during regular weekday business hours.

Atlooe Main Branch Details

The main branch operates from Monday to Friday from 07:30 to 16:00, with queue management starting daily at 06:00. Despite the full reopening, the main branch continues to face a high volume of visitors, leading to increased waiting times and long queues.

Although SASSA has warned benefit recipients against staying overnight near the office, the issue of heavy congestion for visitors at the Atlooe facility persists. However, alternative service points are available for benefit recipients that can alleviate the overload at the central office and reduce waiting times:

  • Heideveld Service Point: open only on Mondays at 167 Heideveld Road, Heideveld.
  • Langa Service Point: open on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Corner of Church Street & Langalibalele Drive, Langa.

The agency noted that visiting these localized points on their respective operating days is a more convenient alternative for local residents, helping to distribute administrative load and optimize overall service delivery in the region.

Last month, following a meeting with the Western Cape Minister of Social Development, Jacob Londt, SASSA announced plans to improve services, reduce queues, and accelerate digital transformation. Key outcomes include support for modernization such as electronic queue management and self-service kiosks, as well as the appointment of Lunelwa Sigasana Makaule as the regional executive manager for the Western Cape.

To meet demand during the winter period, SASSA plans to hire queue dispatchers, extend operating hours, improve appointment scheduling, and conduct real-time queue monitoring. While equipment for digital tools is awaited, SASSA is working on resolving Department of Home Affairs backlogs, supporting Postbank, and filling personnel vacancies to meet the needs of benefit recipients.
