Questions have once again arisen regarding China's new construction projects around the South China Sea. Satellite images dated August 17, 2026, revealed three new structures on Yagun Island, which is part of the Paracel Islands group. Experts suggest that these constructions could be radar stations or observation centers, but their exact purpose has not yet been determined.
Yagun Island is located approximately 14 kilometers from the Antelope Reef. China has previously carried out large-scale construction on the Antelope Reef. The appearance of new objects on Yagun Island intensifies public discussions about China's activities. According to the images, work on erecting these structures began around March and April.
Yagun Island is part of the Crescent group within the Paracel Islands. The three discovered objects resemble radar and observation centers built in other areas. If a radar station is installed on the island, it would allow for monitoring of air and sea space in the vicinity. Demian Saiman, an open-source intelligence specialist, noted that it is premature to assert that it is specifically a radar station. Collin Koch, a security expert from Singapore, believes it could be a small observation center, but based on the available images, the probability that it is a radar station seems higher.
China's construction on the Antelope Reef, located 14 kilometers from Yagun Island, is highly significant. Satellite photographs show an artificial island about 6 kilometers long with a coastline exceeding 3 kilometers. Some specialists believe that this flat surface could potentially be used in the future to create a runway. Nevertheless, China has not officially confirmed the creation of a military base there.
China claims that the structures on the Antelope Reef are intended for collecting meteorological information, ensuring fishing safety, and conducting scientific research. The Chinese Ministry of National Defense has not provided an immediate response regarding the new construction on Yagun Island.
