An archaeological group analyzed unidentified bone remains extracted from the Italian Grotte di Gattari. Using paleoproteomics methods, researchers were able to determine that among the large number of selected samples, there were presumably four Neanderthal bones.
These bones are approximately 65 to 66 thousand years old. The results of this study were presented in a scientific publication published in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports.
