Following his triumphant performance in the Comrades marathon, George Kusche demonstrated a strong return to competitive activity, showing a confident result at the Absa Run Your City Tshwane 10k race.
Kusche participated in the Absa Run Your City Tshwane 10k last weekend, returning to active training after a well-deserved rest following his victory at the Comrades Marathon in June. He finished in 13th place, which was an impressive result considering the high level of participants.
In an exclusive interview with IOL after Sunday's race, Kusche noted: 'I think everything went well—it's a good first attempt after Comrades.' He expected to run the distance in approximately 29 minutes and 50 seconds – 30 minutes 00 seconds, and finished in approximately 30 minutes 08 seconds, which met his expectations. He added that the race was challenging, but he is satisfied with the effort put in.
Despite winning the grueling 'Ultimate Human Race' in June, Kusche's deep track preparation makes him a serious contender across any distance in the South African road running system. This middle-distance specialist, who recently turned 28, holds a personal best of 13:28 in the 5000m, as well as a 10k record of 28:56 set two years ago in Gqeberha, and appears fully capable of surpassing this mark in the near future.
Patience and Concentration for Kusche After Comrades Victory
However, Kusche revealed that regaining full physical condition after Comrades required patience. He explained that for a long time, his focus was solely on Comrades, but it is crucial to regain peak speed again. He took two full weeks off before resuming light running, but it took six weeks to return to base level. In the last two weeks, his rhythm has recovered, and he is now on a good upward trajectory.
Despite rapid progress in the ultra-marathon before this year's win, Kusche remains balanced and refuses to dwell on past success. He shared his thoughts: 'The victory in Comrades is an amazing feeling, and I finally allowed it to settle in my mind. But now it's time to look forward, not focus on what's behind. For me, it all comes down to commitment to the process, hard work, and maintaining focus.'
