Uzbekistan has signed contracts for projects aimed at expanding sewage infrastructure in Shahrisabz and the central district of Kitab in the Kashkadarya region, as well as in the Karam region of the Navoi region. According to JSC Uzsuvtaminot, these projects involve the construction of treatment facilities, sewage networks, and pumping stations, which will increase the coverage of wastewater collection by nearly 290,000 residents.
The total cost of this infrastructure initiative is 119 million euros. The loan agreement between Uzbekistan and the French Development Agency (AFD) was signed on March 25, 2022. Additionally, the European Commission provided a grant of 8.15 million euros for these projects through the French Development Agency.
The signing ceremony took place as part of cooperation with the AFD and the European Union. Participants included representatives of the French Embassy in Uzbekistan, the EU Delegation, AFD, construction companies, technical supervision organizations, and management of JSC Uzsuvtaminot.
Details of construction works
Contracts were signed for both the execution of construction tasks and for technical supervision and consulting support. Within the construction package in Shahrisabz, detailed design and construction work are entrusted to a consortium including the Turkish company Alkatas Insaat ve Taahut A.S. and MESMER-EAST LLC. Alkatas Insaat ve Taahut A.S. was selected as the contractor for the construction package in Navoi.
Technical supervision will be carried out by DOHWA Engineering Co., Ltd. from South Korea and SAFEGE S.A.S. from France.
Projects in Kashkadarya Region
In the Kashkadarya region, the project will cover Shahrisabz and the administrative center of the Kitab district. Plans include the construction of two treatment plants with a total daily capacity of 53,000 cubic meters, the laying of 521.2 kilometers of sewage networks, and the installation of 10 pumping stations. After completion, wastewater disposal services will be available to 240,400 residents across 51 quarters.
In the center of the Kitab district, where centralized infrastructure was previously absent, coverage will reach 81 percent, serving 63,400 people for the first time. In Shahrisabz, coverage will increase from the current 8 percent (19,600 residents) to 86 percent, providing services to 177,000 residents.
Development in Navoi Region
In the Karam district of the Navoi region, there is a plan to build a treatment facility with a daily capacity of 9,800 cubic meters, network length of 161 kilometers, and five pumping stations. This will allow 49,400 out of 54,900 residents in 14 quarters to gain access to centralized wastewater treatment services for the first time, bringing the overall coverage to 90 percent.
