Meeting held in Tashkent on the restoration of the Aral Sea ecosystem

The seventh meeting of the Steering Committee for the Aral Sea Wetlands project was held at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) office in Tashkent. The meeting aimed to review the results of the second quarter of 2026 and determine the next steps for preserving the ecosystems of the Aral Sea basin.

This joint initiative is implemented with the participation of UNDP, the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The project focuses on sustainable management and conservation of lakes, wetlands, and coastal corridors within the Aral Sea basin, as well as the restoration of degraded ecosystems.

Discussion of Results and Activities

Alisher Salomov, Advisor to the Chairman of the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, and Anas Fayyad Karman, UNDP's Resident Representative in Uzbekistan, co-chaired the meeting. Participants assessed the project's achievements during the reporting period, focusing on biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, and environmental governance.

During the second quarter of 2026, the project conducted seventeen educational seminars and training sessions for specialists in water and land resource management. The committee also noted a three-day media expedition that took place in July 2026. During this expedition, media representatives visited natural sites and ecosystems in the lower reaches of the Amu Darya River, which led to subsequent coverage of regional environmental issues and the need for nature conservation.

Furthermore, committee members discussed the project's microgrant program, which aims to support local initiatives focused on protecting natural resources. The agenda also included the launch of a new UNDP innovation contest titled 'Innovative Solutions for Restoring Degraded and Saline Lands in the Lower Reaches of the Amu Darya River,' intended to find practical methods for land restoration.

The committee also examined legal and institutional measures to ensure environmental governance, build institutional capacity, comply with environmental legislation, and reviewed budget priorities for the third quarter of 2026.

Comedian Shukurillo Isroilov appointed deputy head of Tashkent Culture Department

The well-known Uzbek comedian Shukurillo Isroilov has been appointed as the deputy head of the Tashkent Culture Department. Bekzod Bahromov was appointed to the position of department head.

These personnel changes became known after a meeting with representatives of the capital's cultural and artistic spheres. The meeting discussed plans for implementing industry reforms and defining future tasks.

During the meeting, it was emphasized that efforts must be intensified in Tashkent to implement cultural reforms. Industry employees were instructed to study new regulatory acts in detail and ensure their practical application, including the introduction of new approaches stipulated in relevant resolutions.

Shukurillo Isroilov was born on January 14, 1970. His education includes graduating from a music school specializing in the rubab, the Tashkent Institute of Arts with a theatrical specialization, and the International Faculty of the Institute of Oriental Studies. He began his concert career in 1982, performing both in Uzbekistan and abroad, including the USA, UAE, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. Additionally, Isroilov engages in acting in theater and has participated in film production.

Avion Airlines' Laboratory Aircraft Will Begin Scheduled Flights Over Tashkent

According to the Ministry of Transport of Uzbekistan, citing the Uzbekistan Air Navigation Center, scheduled checks of the airport's air navigation systems using a laboratory aircraft operated by Avion Airlines will begin over Tashkent on August 20, 2026.

These inspection flights will last for several days. Authorities advised residents of the capital not to worry about the flights, emphasizing that they are part of a standard technical verification procedure.

During the tests, the aircraft may make multiple low-altitude passes over city areas at an altitude of about 1000 meters. These activities are intended to assess the accuracy and functionality of local air navigation systems.

The Uzbekistan Air Navigation Center appointed Avion as a specialized airline to carry out inspections and calibration of airfield radio equipment, visual lighting systems, and special work. To conduct these operations, the company acquired a Diamond DA62 MPP aircraft equipped with precise instruments to ensure that the air navigation systems comply with the international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Previously, Uzbekistan involved aircraft from Kazakhstan to conduct similar technical checks. Establishing its own specialized operator allows the country to perform major air navigation checks using domestic resources.
