Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Optimistic About Trade Deal with US Amid US-Canada Stalemate

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed firm optimism regarding the possibility of reaching a trade agreement with Donald Trump. This diplomatic activity takes place against the backdrop of her chief trade negotiator conducting high-level talks in Washington, following the unexpected collapse of trade negotiations between the United States and Canada.

Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard, serving as Sheinbaum's chief negotiator, will remain in Washington for several days. His main task is to successfully reduce the 50% tariffs imposed by the US on Mexican steel and aluminum, as well as the 25% duties affecting automobiles.

Current discussions are taking place within the framework of the six-year USMCA trade pact, which includes the US, Mexico, and Canada. Last month, this agreement officially entered the annual review phase, raising the stakes for all three participating countries amid changing bilateral tensions.

Recent Washington talks with Ottawa completely broke down due to disagreements over minor details. This prompted President Trump to announce plans to double tariffs on Canadian cars and parts starting next year. This failure immediately triggered a 50% US levy on Canadian goods worth about $20 billion.

In response to the escalation of measures by the US, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the introduction of retaliatory tariffs, effective September 8th. Similar to the mechanism applied to Mexico, current import duties on Canadian cars remain at 25%, strictly applied to non-American content, while imported steel faces high levies of 50%.

Despite the general regional instability and the serious breakdown in relations between the US and Canada, Mexican leadership remains confident in finding common ground. President Sheinbaum told reporters that she hopes to reach a mutually beneficial agreement with the US administration.

As Minister Ebrard continues his discussions in Washington, investors and industry stakeholders will monitor the ongoing USMCA annual reviews. The outcome of these negotiations will ultimately determine whether North American trade can stabilize or face deeper protectionist barriers.
