The documentary film titled 'From Dust We Spin' draws attention to the Mitchells Plain area for positive reasons. This award-winning production tells the story of a young and determined spinner who finds freedom in the forbidden sport of spinning.
The world premiere of the film took place at the Durban International Film Festival, where the movie received an award for Best Documentary in South Africa and is now competing for an Academy Award nomination. The film was screened at the kykNet Silwerskermfees event last week at The Bay hotel in Camps Bay.
The film, directed by Julia Jans, captivated audiences from beginning to end, following the life and struggles of Logan Mart from Mitchells Plain, aged 21, and her mentor Mark Linden. The documentary also features the late Justin Williams, better known as Bemors, and the legend Eddie Rasta.
Logan Mart, the main character, shared how she overcame difficulties such as bullying and suicide attempts to ultimately master the art of driving to exhaustion. She mentioned that she started spinning in 2022 at the age of 17, although she had been part of her father's team since she was four years old.
Mart noted that spinning brings her peace and an adrenaline rush, helping her distract herself from home problems and any worries. 'The moment I get into the car, it distracts my mind from everything,' she said.
Mark Linden, 46 years old and originally from Portland, stated that he is now passing on his experience to young people. He expressed joy at the opportunity to tell his story to the world and added that they are praying for an Oscar win, as he has always wanted to achieve this.
