According to the Puranas, Guru Shukracharya practiced asceticism and meditation for a long time to gain the favor of the gods and receive power from them. It was thanks to this practice that he mastered many spells and medicinal remedies, which he later passed on to his disciples.

In Vedic astrology, Shukracharya is associated with the planet Venus. Venus is one of the nine planets (Navagraha) and is considered the ruler of the signs Taurus and Libra. In astrology, Venus is associated with love, beauty, art, material prosperity, charm, and progeny.

Guru Shukracharya was the son of Maharshi Bhrigu and Khyati (Mata Kavya). Some legends mention that Shukracharya studied at the ashram of the great sage Angira. There, he studied with Angira's son, Brahma. However, Shukracharya felt that Angira paid more attention to his son than to him. Upset by this, he left Angira's ashram and then received knowledge from the great sage Gautama.

According to mythology, Guru Shukracharya had four sons: Chand, Amrak, Tvashtar, and Dhatratra. Additionally, a daughter named Devayani was born to his second wife, who is also called Indra's daughter in some narratives.

According to the Devi Bhagavata Purana, during one battle, the gods were numerically superior to the asuras. To protect themselves, the asuras came to the ashram of Maharshi Bhrigu. Coincidentally, neither Maharshi Bhrigu nor Guru Shukracharya were in the ashram at that time; only Mata Khyati (Kavya) was there. Seeing Mata Kavya, all the asuras sought refuge with her. Mata Kavya, observing hospitality, provided them shelter.

It is said that Mata Kavya was so powerful that she created a strong and invisible barrier around her ashram to help the asuras. The gods could not penetrate this protective shell. As soon as Mata Kavya looked at the gods, they immediately lost consciousness. After this, the gods appealed to Lord Vishnu for help. To maintain balance in the Universe, Lord Vishnu ordered his Sudarshana Chakra to destroy Mata Kavya's protective barrier and annihilate her.

When Maharshi Bhrigu learned about this, he became furious and cursed Lord Vishnu, condemning him to be born as a human on Earth and suffer separation from his wife. Later, when Shukracharya learned of his mother's death, he became very angry with Lord Vishnu. It is believed that this is why he forbade the asuras from worshipping Lord Vishnu and began supporting the asuras instead of the gods.

According to the Bhagavata Purana, after the defeat of the asuras in the battle, Guru Shukracharya was very upset and angry. As a result, he began severe asceticism to appease Lord Shiva with the aim of defeating the gods. It is said that he performed this asceticism with his head down and feet up.

When Devaraja Indra learned of Shukracharya's severe asceticism, he sent his daughter Jajanti to disrupt his meditation. However, all of Jajanti's attempts were unsuccessful because Shukracharya was so immersed in his practice that he paid her no attention.

After this, pleased with Guru Shukracharya's severe asceticism, Lord Shiva offered him to ask for any blessing. Then Guru Shukracharya asked Lord Shiva for the knowledge of the Sanjivani Mantra. This mantra was believed to be able to revive dead people. Lord Shiva imparted the knowledge of the Sanjivani Mantra to him but also warned him not to use it improperly. After this, Guru Shukracharya applied this mantra in the interests of the asuras. It is believed that he used the Sanjivani Mantra to resurrect the asuras who died in the battle, allowing them to fight against the gods again.

How did the name Shukracharya come about?
