In a small island state like São Tomé and Príncipe, tourism is considered an essential pillar for sustainable development, representing a crucial source of employment, income, foreign exchange, and investment opportunities, as declared by Américo Ramos during a forum held to celebrate National Tourism Day.
Ramos emphasized that the tourism sector has a unique capacity to integrate various areas, such as agriculture, transport, culture, and hospitality, promoting economic growth in a transversal and inclusive manner.
The governmental leader of São Tomé and Príncipe stressed that the country possesses sufficient potential to achieve the status of a world-class tourist destination both regionally and globally. He mentioned the possibility of building a tourist destination that is authentic, sustainable, and distinct, generating direct benefits for the economy, culture, and, primarily, the population.
Among the attributes highlighted by Américo Ramos are the notable natural and cultural heritage, exotic beaches, dense tropical forests, endemic biodiversity, and recognized hospitality—factors that reinforce the country's vocation for ecotourism and conservation.
Additionally, the recent classification of the entire territory of São Tomé and Príncipe as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve was cited, which strengthens the international perception of the country as a green, authentic, safe, and smaller-scale location.
Ramos also pointed out that the National Strategy for Sustainable Development for the period 2026-2040 positions tourism among the strategic sectors for economic diversification and poverty reduction, underlining the urgency of implementing a growth model that is resilient, inclusive, and green.
According to the latest national report from the Satellite Account of Tourism, the sector contributed directly with approximately 11% of the Gross Domestic Product and 10% of the gross value added in 2024, establishing itself as one of the main drivers of the São Tomé economy, comparable in importance to agriculture and other traditional segments.
