In several Indian states, including Karnataka and Delhi, there is an increase in cases of bird flu. Over 4,000 cases have been registered in Karnataka, and more than 1,700 in Delhi. Concerns have arisen regarding whether these cases could rise as sharply as COVID-19 cases after many years of high incidence, and how dangerous the H1N1 virus is compared to coronavirus.
Professor Dr. Jugal Kishore from the Department of Community Medicine at Safdarjung Hospital commented on the situation. He noted that both bird flu and coronavirus are viral diseases that primarily affect the respiratory tract—nose, throat, and lungs. Symptoms include fever, cough, weakness, and body aches; some patients may develop difficulty breathing. Nevertheless, the mortality rate for both viruses remains below 1 percent, and currently, there is no basis to consider bird flu extremely dangerous.
The Indian Centre for Disease Control (ICMR) stated that no new H1N1 strains have been found in India. The circulating virus is not new and fully matches the strains included in the vaccine. Therefore, there is no reason to anticipate a situation similar to that seen with coronavirus. The public should not panic about bird flu, as it does not pose a threat level comparable to coronavirus. However, precautionary measures should not be neglected. Most patients recover on their own, but if severe fever, body aches, or breathing problems appear, it is crucial to consult a doctor as soon as possible.
Due to the increase in bird flu (H1N1) cases, central and regional governments have taken decisive action. Strict instructions have been issued regarding the preparation of isolation and emergency wards in hospitals, the reservation of necessary medicines and beds, and the strengthening of monitoring through referral laboratories such as AIIMS and NCDC. Major laboratories, including AIIMS and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), have been mobilized to analyze samples. Citizens are advised to get tested if they develop flu symptoms. Furthermore, health departments in regions with rising incidence have been instructed to remain on high alert and complete all preparations related to the treatment and prevention of the virus.
