The installation of a dome on the mausoleum of Shama Tabrizi in Hoye has begun, which is a major architectural project in northwestern Iran. This was reported by the director general of the Department of Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Crafts of West Azerbaijan.
Morteza Safari stated on Monday that the unique engineering and architectural features of this project will allow the dome to become a prominent urban landmark in Hoye. According to him, the total height of the dome will be 15.5 meters, making it one of the tallest domes built in northwestern Iran.
He added that the first phase of work, which included the construction of the concrete structure, has been completed, and work is continuing on the 9.5-meter high steel frame. The dome is designed as a double shell. Its exterior will be made of traditional brickwork, while the interior will be decorated with stucco and karbandi—a traditional Iranian architectural technique that includes geometric ornamental vaulting.
According to Safari, the brickwork draws inspiration from historical periods and uses innovative, project-specific methods intended to distinguish this structure from similar architectural objects. He noted that the dome should serve not only as an important cultural and memorial structure but also as an example of modern achievement in architecture and engineering in northwestern Iran.
Shama Tabrizi (1185–1248) was a 13th-century Persian mystic whose teachings deeply influenced Jalaluddin Rumi. He is the bearer of the name Divan Shama Tabrizi Rumi and is traditionally associated with Rumi's spiritual transformation. The city of Hoye, located in West Azerbaijan province, has historically served as a crossroads of culture and trade.
