The Director of Exploration at the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) announced the discovery of a new 'Taktech' gas field in Fars province. The economic value of this field is estimated to be around $45 billion, making it one of the most significant gas discoveries in the country in the last two decades.
In an interview with Shana, Seyed Mohieddin Jafari provided detailed information about the discovery. He specified that the 'Taktech' field is located 10 kilometers northwest of the city of Hongd and is approximately 35 kilometers from the old gas fields of 'Shanul' and 'Homa'.
The total volume of gas in this field is estimated at 7,500 billion cubic feet. With a recovery factor of 72% from this volume, approximately 5,700 billion cubic feet can be extracted. Jafari noted that the gas from 'Taktech' is 'sweet,' meaning it does not require a purification process, and therefore its development and processing will proceed faster than sour gas fields.
He added that the recoverable gas from 'Taktech' is equivalent to production for about 15 years at the standard phase of South Pars, and emphasized that these reserves could play a significant role in meeting the country's gas needs.
The field measures about 50 kilometers in length and 4 kilometers in width. Jafari characterized it as 'one of the most complex exploration structures discovered in the last 20 years' in terms of geological complexity. He explained that multiple layer repetitions and faults in the upper reservoir sections significantly complicated the search operations. Nevertheless, drilling continued to a depth of about five kilometers underground, and upon entering the reservoir, a significant volume of gas measuring approximately 450 meters was found.
Furthermore, Jafari reported the presence of 27 million barrels of gas condensate in the 'Taktech' field, of which about 20 million barrels are recoverable. Combined with the gas reserves, this raises the economic value of the field to approximately $40 billion.
Regarding the exploration timeline, Jafari stated that drilling the 'Taktech' exploratory well took about 17 months. After completing the exploration work and final tests, the data obtained were thoroughly analyzed.
The NIOC Director of Exploration particularly emphasized that the entire exploration process of the 'Taktech' field was carried out by Iranian personnel. He stated that all stages of exploration—from geological surveys and geophysical activities to drilling operations—were conducted using Iranian capabilities. Jafari also noted that the technology, equipment, and tools used in this operation are Iranian, and foreign specialists or companies were not required in technical, equipping, or engineering fields.
He characterized the 'Taktech' gas field as a completely Iranian discovery, stressing that this achievement demonstrates that the country's technical, engineering, and specialized potential in oil and gas exploration has reached a level that allows for the successful completion of complex projects without dependence on foreign partners.
