UPI System Marks 10th Anniversary, Recording Nearly 13,000-Fold Growth in Transaction Volume

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI), launched on August 25, 2016, has completed a decade of transforming the landscape of digital payments in India, becoming the foundation of the country's digital payment ecosystem and a global benchmark for real-time payments.

The Ministry of Finance reported that the annual transaction volume of UPI increased from 1.78 crore in 2016-17 to over 24,162 crore in 2025-26, representing a growth of nearly 13,000 times. Over the same period, the transaction value grew from 0.07 lakh crore to approximately 314 lakh crore, which is an increase of more than 4,000 times.

Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) under the regulatory oversight of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), UPI has demonstrated unprecedented expansion in both volume and value of transactions over the last ten years.

The year 2026 marked a significant milestone in UPI's growth trajectory. It was noted that monthly transaction volumes first exceeded 2,300 crore in May 2026, reaching 2,320 crore transactions, indicating a new level of system adoption. This positive momentum continued throughout the year, with 2,366 crore transactions registered in July 2026, marking the highest monthly transaction volume in UPI's decade of operation.

Since the launch of UPI, there has been stable and wide expansion of institutional participation. The number of banks connected to UPI has grown from 44 banks in 2016-17, the first year of operation, to 703 banks by 2025-26.

In the fiscal year 26, UPI transactions totaling 24,162 crore reflect the deep integration of the platform into daily digital payment usage across the country, including strong growth in the merchant segment. In a statement, it was emphasized that UPI has become a key element of India's digital public infrastructure, providing a compatible platform for instant payments both between individuals and from them to merchants through a single interface.

The platform has facilitated expanded access to digital finance services, helped bridge the digital divide, and strengthened financial inclusion, enabling individuals, businesses, and traders across the country to participate in the formal digital economy. The growth in both volume and value of transactions also points to UPI's deepening role in India's high-frequency retail payment ecosystem.
