Swine flu threat is growing: Doctors advise vaccination for prevention

Currently, there is an increase in cases of swine flu not only in Delhi but also in many other states. Symptoms in people include high fever, cough, runny nose, and sore throat; some patients also experience breathing difficulties. Due to the rising number of cases, it is crucial to take measures to prevent swine flu.

Swine flu is a type of influenza virus. Protection against swine flu and other strains of influenza is provided by the flu vaccine. The annual flu vaccine is updated to remain effective against all strains that may circulate during that season. It is developed taking into account the main strains of the influenza virus circulating throughout the year, which allows it to effectively protect against swine flu.

Professor Dr. Subhash Giri from the Department of Medicine at RML Hospital in Delhi told Aajtak.in that the vaccine used to protect against swine flu is called the seasonal influenza vaccine. It is also known as the modern quadrivalent flu shot.

Dr. Subhash emphasized that the influenza virus constantly mutates, so the vaccine also needs periodic updates. Generally, it can be administered to people over 6 months of age. However, those with serious health problems must consult a doctor before vaccination.

After receiving the vaccine, the body requires about two weeks to develop immunity against the flu. Therefore, it is recommended to get this vaccination after consulting a doctor, especially now when swine flu cases have significantly increased. Timely vaccination brings several benefits: it helps avoid severe symptoms of swine flu and reduces the likelihood of hospitalization.

Although the flu can affect anyone, it can run a severe course in some individuals. Therefore, special attention to flu prevention should be paid by young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those suffering from diabetes, heart or lung diseases. People with weakened immune systems are also at risk of a severe infection course and are strongly advised to get vaccinated.

Regarding the cost of the vaccine, in India, the price can vary depending on the brand and type of vaccine. In private clinics, it can cost from a few hundred to approximately 1000–2000 rupees or even more. If you plan to get vaccinated, consult a doctor and visit a hospital. The procedure is safe and serves to protect against the flu.
