The fictional underwater city of Bikini Bottom, known in the Arabic version of the popular American series SpongeBob SquarePants as «Qaa Al Hamour», has taken over Egyptian social media. Users have begun treating this imaginary place as if it were a real neighborhood.
This trend started in a Facebook group called «Complaints of Bikini Bottom Residents», where members shared fictional complaints, everyday problems, and jokes, portraying characters like SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward as real residents.
According to Egyptian media reports, this group quickly gained about 500,000 members, and screenshots and jokes spread beyond Facebook. By August 21st, the joke had gone beyond the group, and Egyptian celebrities began participating in the trend.
Actor Mostafa Ghareeb shared an edited photo of himself in Bikini Bottom, humorously changing his name to «Mostafa Ghariik»—a play on words based on an Arabic word meaning drowned person. Bassem Samra also joined the trend by posting an underwater photo, while Ahmed Malek joked that those waiting for his downfall no longer needed to wait, as he was already «at the bottom». Hana El Zahid also participated in the trend, sharing her vision of «moving» to Bikini Bottom.
Part of the humor lies in how familiar these complaints seem. Instead of simply spreading memes about SpongeBob, users transformed Bikini Bottom into an imaginary Egyptian district, using its characters and locations for jokes about daily difficulties and problems.
The idea quickly transformed from a single Facebook community into a broader social trend, as users created their own variations and celebrities placed themselves in SpongeBob's underwater world. Currently, Egypt may have acquired a new fictional district, which is, however, located at the bottom of the sea.
