Three higher education institutions from South Africa have been included in the list of the 500 best educational institutions in the world according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) for 2026.
The University of Cape Town ranked first nationally, falling within the 201–300 range in the latest ranking. This university's high performance is mainly attributed to a significant volume of published and highly cited scientific research, especially in the field of natural sciences.
The University of the Witwatersrand, located in Johannesburg, secured second place nationally, placing it in the 301–400 range, while Stellenbosch University was categorized in the 401–500 bracket.
Furthermore, several other South African universities were also included among the top 1000 global institutions.
ARWU, which is published annually by the China-based consulting company ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, uses six objective criteria to assess university effectiveness. These criteria include the presence of Nobel Prize and Fields Medal laureates among graduates and staff, highly cited researchers, publications in Nature and Science journals, as well as publications indexed in major citation databases and per capita academic productivity.
The ranking covers over 2500 universities, with data published for the top 1000.
Harvard University maintains the leading position in the global ranking, followed by Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. American universities dominate the top 100 with 37 institutions represented, while China has 16 representatives, led by Tsinghua University, which ranks 18th globally.
The first ARWU publication took place in 2003 by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and since 2009, the ranking has been issued by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy.
