Indian stock market shows record growth thanks to deals worth about $10 billion

India's equity market is heading towards its best month ever, despite sluggish stock market dynamics, as significant domestic liquidity continues to stimulate demand for new shares.

In August, deals worth nearly $10 billion were concluded, with the government's large sale of Life Insurance Corp. of India (LIC) shares amounting to $3.2 billion playing a key role. Additionally, the Initial Public Offering (IPO) of Manipal Health Enterprises Ltd. worth $958 million, along with a series of block trades and institutional placements, contributed to the increase in the total transaction volume.

This record trading volume is driven by the increased share of local mutual funds and Indian insurance companies, active participation from retail investors, and the return of global funds. These factors enhance the market's capacity to absorb large offerings. Such resilience may provide momentum for major listings expected later this year from National Stock Exchange of India Ltd. and Jio Platforms Ltd.

This positive trend contrasts with the moderate performance of the country's secondary market, valued at $5.1 trillion, which remains one of the laggards in the region this year. Although the NSE Nifty 50 index has remained virtually unchanged compared to two years ago, investors are actively acquiring new listings. Of the 24 companies that debuted in August, all except four are trading above their IPO prices.

Sunil Shah, CEO of Mumbai-based Khambatta Securities Ltd., noted that companies have overcome the indecision caused by trading turmoil and the war in the Middle East. He also added that some issuers agreed to lower valuations to complete their deals.
