Hotels have different towels: how to use each one correctly

When staying at a good hotel, guests are often impressed by the cleanliness and pristine white towels. After washing up in the bathroom, people might grab any available towel to dry their face, but there is a chance they might use a towel intended for the toilet.

It is important to understand that although all towels in a hotel may look identical, their purposes are completely different. Many mistakenly assume a small towel is for the face, when some are meant for drying feet. Therefore, on your next hotel stay, you should carefully examine the size and placement of the towel before taking it.

In three- or five-star luxury hotels, various towels are usually provided for each task. These may include a bath towel, a bath sheet, a hand towel, a face towel, a bath mat, and a pool or spa towel. Each towel has its own size and function.

The largest is the bath towel; it is thick and used to dry the entire body after bathing. It is easy to distinguish from other towels.

The bath sheet is even larger than the bath towel and is mainly found in luxury hotels. It can be freely wrapped around the body after a shower.

The towel located near the sink, which is neither too large nor too small, is usually a hand towel. It is used for drying hands after washing. Although it can sometimes be used for light facial cleansing, a dedicated face towel is better for facial skin.

The smallest and softest towel is usually a face towel or sponge specifically designed for facial cleansing. Therefore, you should always choose this one for drying your face.

A bath mat is a thick or slightly stiff towel placed on the floor outside the bathroom, which often causes confusion. Its purpose is to dry wet feet after bathing, so it should not be used to dry the face or hands.

If the hotel has a pool or spa, there may be separate towels there, which are usually thicker and highly absorbent, and are used after visiting the pool or spa.

If you are unsure about using a towel in the hotel, simply pay attention to its size and location. The largest and thickest is for drying the body after a shower. Very large is the bath sheet, for wrapping the body. Medium-sized and near the sink is for hands. Small and soft is for the face. A thick towel lying on the floor or outside the bathroom is for feet. A thick towel in the pool area is for the pool or spa.

The main reason lies in hygiene and cleanliness. If the same towel is used for hands, face, body, and feet, dirt and bacteria can move from one place to another. This is why hotels use different towels for different purposes to minimize the risk of cross-contamination.

Thus, the next time you see a full set of white towels in a hotel room, you do not need to be confused. Just remember that although all towels may look similar, their functions are not identical.
