Vehicle Armor Guide: Selection Criteria and Essential Maintenance

According to the Brazilian Armor Association (Abrablin), the automotive armor sector in Brazil generated approximately R$ 3.5 billion in 2025 alone, with projections of increase in the following years. Due to the expansion of this market and the variety of available options, the search for safety on the road has elevated this service to the status of a strategic investment.

However, to ensure the effectiveness of ballistic protection, prior planning, compliance with legal regulations, and constant preventive maintenance of the armored vehicle are essential. This guide offers guidance on the acquisition and necessary care to preserve the armored car.

The decision to armor involves both technical and financial analysis. In Brazilian territory, there are three categories of armor permitted for civil use. A more robust category requires military authorization, while levels IV and V are prohibited for private use.

Before finalizing any deal, it is crucial to verify the armor company's registration with the Army, investigate its credibility, and confirm whether the vehicle structure can support the extra weight. The installation procedure has an average duration of 30 days and requires specialized monitoring. Upon completion, the owner must receive the Armor Responsibility Term, which details the degree of protection, the materials used, the validity of the service, and the component manufacturer.

The cost of armor varies according to the selected level and the vehicle model. For level I-A, the price ranges from R$ 50 thousand to R$ 60 thousand. Level III-A, considered the most common in the country, can cost up to R$ 100 thousand, potentially increasing depending on the options chosen by the buyer.

An attractive alternative in the new vehicle segment is armor certified directly by the manufacturer. Major manufacturers present in Brazil offer this service, allowing the customer to request protection at the time of purchase. In these cases, the installation is carried out by a certified third-party company, maintaining the original warranty. There are also brands that offer factory armor.

The increase in weight, which can range between 150 kg and 250 kg, impacts the center of gravity and the driving dynamics of the automobile. The transparent part of the vehicle, composed of alternating layers of polycarbonate and glass, is the most vulnerable and requires daily attention.

Although armor reduces risks, it does not guarantee total invulnerability of the vehicle. It is essential that the driver keeps the doors locked, windows closed, and adopts defensive driving behavior to protect themselves and the occupants.
