Lamontville Golden Arrows defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 in the first match of the MTN8 semi-final, allowing them to gain an advantage heading into the return leg.
The central striker Junior Dion became the hero of the match by scoring the decisive goal in the 38th minute at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday. This victory gives the Abafana Besthende team a significant advantage before the match in Umlazi next week, where it will be decided who plays in the final against Orlando Pirates or Sekhukhune United.
Despite Sundowns controlling possession for a long time, they failed to turn this control into clear goal-scoring opportunities, while Arrows maintained discipline and effectively utilized counterattacks.
Coach Miguel Cardoso made several changes to the starting lineup, giving players who had not played regularly at the beginning of the season a chance to take the field. The Brazilian team showed glimpses of attack in the first 45 minutes, but their restructured defense ultimately suffered due to a loss of concentration.
The moment that allowed Arrows to punish their opponent came in the 38th minute when Khulekani Shezi saw Dion's run behind the Sundowns defense. The cross from the right flank freed up the Arrows striker, who entered the penalty area and calmly sent the ball past the approaching Ricardo Gossa.
Dion, who was the Premier League top scorer last season, did not waste his only clear chance in the first half. This goal secured the lead for Arrows, which they were determined to defend until halftime.
Cardoso reacted at halftime, bringing on two more experienced attacking players—Bryan Lungu and Tashrek Matthews—to help Sundowns get back into the game. These substitutions increased the home team's attacking quality, but the overall game scheme remained largely unchanged.
Sundowns continued to dictate the tempo of possession and push Arrows deeper into their half, while the Dladla team remained compact and looked for opportunities to exploit the spaces left by the Brazilians when advancing. The visitors felt increasingly confident defending their advantage as Sundowns struggled to find the final pass for a breakthrough.
Despite dominating possession, the Brazilians could not equalize. Ultimately, the discipline of the Arrows' defense proved to be the deciding factor, forcing Sundowns to count on a serious response in the second match.
Now the Brazilians face a trip to Umlazi next week, knowing that they will need at least two goals to guarantee themselves a place in the MTN8 final. For Arrows, a clean sheet and a narrow victory give the Pitso Dladla team a valuable foundation to pull off a major surprise against the reigning African champion.
