Stone inscription from the Ilkhanid era discovered in central Iran

During restoration work on the eastern entrance of the Jameh Mosque in Nimvar, a historic city in central Iran, a stone inscription dating back to the Ilkhanid period was found.

According to ISNA, the white travertine stone measures approximately 85 by 34 centimeters and is 10 centimeters thick. It has eight lines of text engraved on it.

Preliminary studies suggest that this inscription may be a document regarding land ownership (endowment), according to a local official. He added that further specialized research by epigraphers and scholars will be required for an accurate assessment of the content and true nature of the artifact.

The inscription specifies the date 764 AH, which corresponds to 742 in the Iranian calendar, thus placing the artifact in the Ilkhanid era. The official noted that the inscription could provide researchers with additional information about the cultural, religious, architectural, and historical development of Nimvar.

Nimvar is a city in the Mahallat district of Markaz province. It is considered one of the oldest settlements in Iran, having historical ties to the Parthian and Sasanian periods. In ancient times, this city also served as an important center of Zoroastrianism.
