Indian Government Issues Directive for Accelerated Transition to Piped Natural Gas (PNG) over LPG

The Indian government has issued a major directive concerning domestic LPG gas. The Ministry of Petroleum has mandated all states and union territories to accelerate the adoption of piped natural gas (PNG) instead of using LPG cylinders to reduce LPG consumption.

Furthermore, it has been announced that connections for users who continue to use LPG in areas already connected to the PNG network will be automatically cancelled. This may lead to gas supply issues for these consumers.

The goal of this move is to enhance digitalization and ensure the safety of the gas supply system. New directives, issued under the 'LPG Control Order 2026' and 'Natural Gas Distribution Order 2026', prohibit the simultaneous existence of both PNG and LPG connections, requiring such citizens to surrender their LPG cylinders.

Petrochemical Secretary Niraj Mittal stated in letters sent to the states that the rules for transitioning from LPG to PNG have been tightened by the government. He clarified that users in localities or complexes where the PNG network is already operational will receive a notification. If a customer fails to arrange a PNG connection within the stipulated time after receiving such a notice, their LPG connection will be automatically terminated.

The situation in the Middle East remains tense due to the conflict between the US and Iran. Both countries claim the Strait of Hormuz, which negatively affects ships transporting oil and gas from the Middle East to Asia. This creates problems with gas supplies. Although India continues to supply oil and gas to many countries, the cost of supplies has increased. In this regard, India is shifting towards using PNG to reduce dependence on LPG, focusing particularly on pipeline installation.

To accelerate the implementation of the PNG connection process, the government has prepared special infrastructure. The directive requires petroleum distribution companies and city gas distribution organizations to establish PNG Coordination Committees in all regions. States are tasked with appointing an official at the level of District Supply Officer (DSO) as the district responsible person.
