Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated on Friday that Canada would mirror US tariffs after rejecting the conditions put forward by Washington for a trade agreement.
In his statement, Carney noted that 'the latest changes to the US proposed terms were unfair, uneconomical, and called into question the reliability of any deal.'
He reported that the US plans to impose a 50% tariff on Canadian goods worth about 28 billion Canadian dollars (approximately 20 billion dollars), which will take effect at midnight. Meanwhile, Canada, according to Carney, will match these tariffs to protect Canadian workers and businesses.
Carney emphasized that significant progress had been made in improving Canada's position to secure, in his description, the best deal in the world with the US. Nevertheless, this progress was insufficient to meet Canada's goals.
Consequently, he decided to suspend trade negotiations with the US and instructed Canadian negotiators to return to Ottawa.
